SENOMYX, INC. ANNOUNCES MANAGEMENT CHANGES AND PROMOTIONS

LA JOLLA, CA (May 22, 2001) – Senomyx, Inc. (www.senomyx.com) announced today that Paul A. Grayson has been appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors and Dr. Mark Zoller to the position of Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President of Research. Dr. Lubert Stryer, who returns to Stanford University following a two-year leave at Senomyx, relinquishes his position as Chairman of the Board and Chief Scientific Officer.

Dr. Stryer said, "I am very pleased that Paul Grayson succeeds me as Chairman of the Board. As CEO, Paul has provided vigorous leadership that has resulted in the rapid growth of Senomyx. Paul has a keen grasp of how advances in receptor biology, combinatorial chemistry, high-throughput screening, and bioinformatics can lead to new flavor and fragrance molecules that will have a major impact on the consumer world. I am also delighted that the Board appointed Mark Zoller to succeed me as CSO. Mark has been highly effective in building a first-class research and development enterprise in taste and olfaction. I look forward to working closely with Paul and Mark in my new role, as in the past. This two-year leave of absence from Stanford, like the one I spent in 1989 and 1990 at the start of Affymax, has been highly stimulating and rewarding."

"All of us at Senomyx are indebted to Dr. Stryer for his overwhelming contributions to the company," stated Paul A. Grayson, CEO and Chairman of the Board. "His work included not only founding the company but also providing vision and leadership. We thank him for his critical contributions to the work at Senomyx and look forward to his active, continued participation at the company."

Paul A. Grayson steps into the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors, in addition to his current duties as CEO. Mr. Grayson was a founder of Senomyx, along with Dr. Stryer and Drs. Charles Zuker and Roger Tsien, both professors at UCSD, Dr. Denis Baylor of Stanford and Hal McGee, an expert on food and cooking. Mr. Grayson was Senior Vice President, Corporate Development at Aurora Biosciences and helped grow that organization into a profitable company. He was responsible for business development, establishing collaborations with Bristol Myers Squibb Company, Eli Lilly and Company, Warner-Lambert Company, Merck & Co., Inc., F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. and Pharmacia & Upjohn, Inc.

Dr. Mark Zoller is promoted to Chief Scientific Officer and remains as Vice President of Research. Dr. Zoller is a noted molecular biologist and most recently was the Scientific Director of the Hoechst-ARIAD Genomics Center and Senior Vice President of Genomics.

Completing the management team are: Mr. Saiid Zarrabian, President and Chief Operating Officer; Dr. Klaus Gubernator, Vice President of Chemistry; Ms. Jean J. Lockhart, Vice President, Finance & Administration and Ms. Tracy Kohlenberg, Vice President, Business Development and Corporate Counsel.
