RICHARD A. LERNER, M.D., PRESIDENT OF THE SCRIPPS RESEARCH INSTITUTE, JOINS SENOMYX SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY BOARD


LA JOLLA (September 14, 2000) – Senomyx, Inc. announced today that Dr. Richard A. Lerner, President of The Scripps Research Institute, has joined the company's Scientific Advisory Board.

"Dr. Richard Lerner is an outstanding scientist and exemplary leader. His pioneering research on catalytic antibodies has enriched our understanding of how enzymes function and has provided novel catalysts. He has at the same time built a preeminent research institute at Scripps focused on the interface between biology and chemistry. Moreover, he has fostered highly rewarding interdisciplinary collaborations within his institution and with industry." said Dr. Lubert Stryer, Chairman of the Board and Chief Scientific Officer.

"We are delighted that Richard has become a scientific advisor to Senomyx and look forward to drawing on his vision and insight in our rapidly expanding chemistry program."

Dr. Lerner graduated from Northwestern University and Stanford Medical School. He interned at Palo Alto Stanford Hospital, received postdoctoral training at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation and held staff appointments at Wistar Institute in Philadelphia and at Scripps. He served as Chairman of the Department of Molecular Biology of The Scripps Research Institute from 1982-1986 before becoming President.

Dr. Lerner's honors include election to the National Academy of Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and receipt of the Wolf Prize in Chemistry. "We anticipate that Dr. Lerner's innovative way of approaching scientific challenges in many areas of biology and chemistry will be important to our work in discovering and developing novel products to modulate taste and olfaction," said Dr. Klaus Gubernator, Vice President of Chemistry.
